  • #games | The quotes have been taken from the game Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, by Firaxis. Some of the authors and sources are fictional.

I had no idea that the famous quote "free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny" is attributed to a fictional character from a classic computer game! Many more gems are to be found here.

  • #games | If you’ve played a Hack-like, Angband will probably look fairly similar at first. It, too, is a grid-based dungeon exploration game where you fight lots of monsters and find objects with unknown properties that you must discover as you play.

I played way too much Angband back in the day! I mean... Literally, I should have played less Angband and more ADOM or Nethack because I missed out on so many aspects that Angband plain out refused to develop, in order to make more space for grindy hack&slash. • #games | For those who played it 20 years ago, Deus Ex set expectations for how malleable game worlds could be, and new standards for reactivity that the rest of the industry failed to match in the decade that followed. Deus Ex was ultimately so influential that, as one of our interviewees points out, its innovations now seem normal.

I didn't play Deus Ex a whole lot, but wow, the little bit I did left very strong memories. This game just looked and felt like something else. Need to revisit it. Also Alexander Brandon's music has been one of my favourite work soundtracks through 2024.

  • #games | 20 years have passed since Epic Games and Digital Extremes released their critically-acclaimed sequel to Unreal, and just one since an ambitious crowdsourced reboot was quietly shelved. Still, the original remains a touchstone for twitchy FPS multiplayer, and Facing Worlds, or “CTF-Face” for "capture the flag", is a microcosm of everything great about it.

What can I say? The most iconic part of a game that will always be special to me.

And to think there are people who have NOT played Baba is You? This game is so unique it basically re-invents puzzling.
